Hate groups expand their influence in Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The number of Tennessee hate groups is at a 16 year high, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The civil rights group’s so-called “Hate Map” is somewhat controversial, but tracks organizations the SPLC believes “attack or malign an entire class of people” for “immutable characteristics.”

The map was first published in the year 2000 and listed 14 hate groups in Tennessee. Last year the number had risen to 41.

Chapters of the Klu Klux Klan are the most common, with 16 such groups statewide. Other groups include White Nationalists, Neo-Nazis, Skinheads, Black Separatists, Neo-Confederates, and Anti-Muslim organizations.

Nashville and Franklin are both home to listed groups.
