MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Unusually heavy summer rainfalls have swollen rivers and creeks all over Tennessee and surrounding areas, making many normally placid areas dangerous for outdoor recreation.
A section of the Stones River in Murfreesboro saw four 911 calls in four days this week, including one accident that ended in death and another that sent a swimmer to the hospital. In East Tennessee, 12 inner tubers had to be pulled from rivers in Rhea and Blount Counties last weekend.
In Kentucky, a fisherman died Sunday after falling into a rushing creek in Franklin County. And in the mountains of North Carolina, a Kentucky man kayaking the Pigeon River died late last week.
The Tennessee Valley Authority has temporarily closed several recreation areas along the Tennessee River because of the high water.
