How much bang are you getting for your tax-dollar buck?

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  -- Just in time for tax day the personal finance website Wallethub.com is out with a report on how well your tax dollars are being spent.

Wallethub looked at dozens of factors to determine which states provide tax payers with the most public sector bang for the buck.

Tennessee scored surprisingly high, checking in at sixth on the list of the states providing taxpayers with the best return on their investment.

The fact that Tennessee doesn’t have an income tax helped, but Wallethub says the state also does a great job of building and maintaining infrastructure, such as roads, bridges and utilities.

Wallethub’s Jill Gonzalez says, however, that Tennessee has room for improvement in the area of public safety.

“Crime rate per capita was, unfortunately, 47th for violent crimes, 40th for property crimes, and 40th for sex offenders, 38th for vehicle fatalities; so those are the areas where obviously Tennessee could use some improvement and what really brought it down on the list.”

Alaska topped the list of state’s providing taxpayers with a strong ROI. Tennessee’s neighbor to the west, Arkansas, came in dead last.
