NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT) -- It’s hard to imagine even the smallest musical niche being ignored here in Music City, but Nashville Symphony Associate Conductor Kelly Corcoran thinks she’s found one.
Corcoran recently launched a non-profit dedicated to supporting a Contemporary Classical Music ensemble that she’s named Intersection. Corcoran says the group will be composed of 15 to 20 musicians drawn from local artists, as well as artists from across the country.
Corcoran says she’s aiming for a Goldilocks ensemble; not too big and not too small.
“There is a tremendous amount of repertoire that is composed for this size of a group that we simply just don’t hear in Nashville ever. So we’re really going to be bringing repertoire and music to the city that is just not happening here right now.”
Corcoran says Intersection will do cross-arts collaborations. The group’s first performance in late March will include a local dance troupe, as-well-as graphic arts from Zietgeist galleries. Corcaran also says half the group’s performances will be geared toward children.
“They (children) don’t have an expectation. They’re just excited to hear whatever it might be that they’re hearing, so I’m really excited to kind of cultivate that generation of listeners.”
The first Intersection performance will take place March 26th at The Platform on Second Ave.
