Iraq and the World Cup on Today's World (6-12)

Today, the push for Baghdad.

The day's big story is, of course, Iraq. Militants continue their move toward the capital Baghdad. Reporter Jane Arraf, who has spent much of the last decade covering events in Iraq, is on the ground and we'll hear from her. We'll also dig in and tell you more about the militant group that's making that push to the Iraqi capital. The group is called ISIS/ISIL, and its leader is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Meanwhile, the World Cup, and its kick off in Brazil, has much of the world transfixed.

For one young fan, "It's just like all your idols in like one place. If you don't watch sports, if you are a music fan, it's like Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and Prince playing together. How you going to miss that?" If you don't get what the big deal is, we couldn't find a better advocate for the joy of the Beautiful Game than 16 year old Brazilian-American soccer fanatic Cassio, quoted above. We'll have Cassio's story on the show today, and give you a sense of what that that Jackson/Beatles/Prince mash-up might actually sound like.

Plus, how environmental issues play into the rise of Boko Haram in Nigeria.
