Judge rules in Oolteway High School basketball rape case

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (AP)   --  A person familiar with the case says one Tennessee high school basketball player has been found guilty of aggravated rape and two others were found guilty of aggravated assault against a freshman teammate.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the juvenile hearing Tuesday involving the Ooltewah High School students was closed to the public and no ruling was publicly announced immediately afterward. The names of the defendants haven't been released because they were in juvenile court.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press first reported the verdicts.

Gatlinburg police said three Ooltewah players assaulted a freshman teammate with a pool cue Dec. 22 while the team was playing in a tournament.

The case has also led to charges against Ooltewah High officials â?? and even the Gatlinburg detective who investigated the incident.

Three Tennessee high school basketball players are due in juvenile court to face charges that they raped a freshman teammate in an apparent hazing incident.

The Sevier County Juvenile Court clerk's office confirmed a hearing for the Ooltewah High School players was scheduled for Tuesday. Because it's a juvenile case, the hearing is closed to the media and the public.

The three defendants face aggravated rape charges. Gatlinburg police say the three Ooltewah players assaulted a freshman Dec. 22 while the team was participating in a holiday tournament. Police say the boy required emergency surgery after older teammates held him down and assaulted him with a pool cue.

A judge rejected prosecutors' attempts in March to have one defendant transferred to adult court.
