Juilliard String Quartet at 70

As we follow the Juilliard String Quartet into a summer at Ravinia and Caramoor, and then a 2014/2015 season with tours in Europe, Asia and major chamber music series across North America, we look forward to a remarkable milestone; the Quartet's 70th anniversary season in 2015/2016.

The Quartet greets this anniversary with programs exemplifying the ensemble's founding credo, to "play new works as if they were established masterpieces, and established masterpieces as if they were new."

Each of the works on the program portrays musical innovation in action, from Schubert's groundbreaking Quartettsatz to a new work from Richard Wernick, to Elliott Carter's stylish Quartet No. 1.

The career-long relationship between Elliott Carter and the Juilliard Quartet is a prime example of the Juilliard's mission to pursue innovation through collaborative relationships with composers.

First violinist Joseph Lin explains, "Lately our thoughts have turned to the quartets of Elliott Carter as we celebrate the recent Sony release of the Five String Quartets of Carter.  Reflecting on a remarkable journey that has spanned several decades and incarnations of the Juilliard String Quartet, it has become clear that we very much want to keep this music and the JSQ/Carter releationship alive, and there seems no better way to do so than to 'begin again' with the Quartet No. 1 of Carter."
