MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- The Supreme Court’s ruling this summer on same sex marriage has had no measureable impact on opposition to gay marriage in Tennessee according to a poll out this week.
The Middle Tennessee University poll surveyed just over 600 registered voters statewide in late October.
The poll shows that 57 percent of Tennesseans surveyed are either opposed or strongly opposed to same sex marriage. Just 29 percent either favor or strongly favor gay marriage.
Those numbers are virtually unchanged from the MTSU Poll taken one year ago, and are out of step with national polls which now show a majority of Americans favoring same sex unions.
MTSU pollsters Ken Blake and Jason Reineke say opposition to gay marriage in Tennessee is strongest among Evangelical Christians, Republicans and residents over the age of 60.
