March sees first big drop in Tenn. jobless rate in a year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Tennessee’s unemployment rate dropped sharply in March to 6.3 percent, according to a new report from the State Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The jobless rate fell three-tenths of one percent from the adjusted February reading of 6.6 percent. The national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.5 percent.

Tennessee’s jobless rate has remained essentially unchanged for the past year, hovering around 6.5 percent. During the same period, the national rate fell more than one full percentage point.

The unemployment rate here in Middle Tennessee is far lower than the statewide average. Williamson, and Rutherford counties currently have jobless rates below 5 percent. Wilson, Sumner, Robertson, Moore, Cheatham and Maury counties all have rates below 6 percent.
