Mid-state homeless charities prepare for cold snap

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Mid-state charities that serve the homeless say they’re prepared for this week’s cold snap.

Shelters here in Murfreesboro have a cooperative arrangement in place for any night that falls below 30 degrees called the Coldest Nights Program. On those nights all drug testing requirements are waived and anyone seeking shelter is cared for.

Scott Foster directs the homeless charity called The Journey Home.

“We use the basement under the gym at First Baptist Church downtown. We use the entrance on Vine Street near Academy. That is a drop in shelter for men anytime the temperature falls below 30 degrees.

A charity called The Way of Hope provides emergency shelter for women and women with children in Murfreesboro.  Way of Hope uses local churches to provide that shelter. Pickup takes place at the charity’s office on Dill Lane at 5 p.m. each evening.

The Journey Home’s Scott Foster says something between 1800 and 2400 people experience homelessness in Rutherford County each year.
