Mid-state legal scholar weighs in on Trump rants against Hispanic judge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A mid-state voice is one of the few raised in support of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s attacks on the Hispanic judge presiding over a lawsuit against the real-estate mogul.

Alberto Gonzalez was U.S. Attorney General during the Bush Administration. He now teaches law at Belmont University. Gonzalez wrote an opinion piece for the Washington Post Sunday defending Trump’s right to express concerns about court bias. The ongoing lawsuit accuses Trump University, a defunct real-estate training venture, of defrauding students.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the judge, the son of Mexican immigrants, is biased. Trump says the judge is punishing him for his controversial campaign promise to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

In a television appearance Monday, Gonzalez qualified his comments about Trump, saying on the program Legal View “The fact that Trump has attacked a Hispanic judge makes me angry.”

However, Gonzalez reiterated his claim that Trump has the right to raise concerns about bias in the case.
