Mid-State Poor Gain Access to Fresh Food

MURFREESBORO,Tenn. (GRIGGS) --Tennesseans getting public food aid can now use their electronic benefit cards to buy locally grown produce at the Rutherford County Farmers Market.

In addition to giving the poor access to fresh food, Rutherford County Extension agent, Janie Becker says, it also opens a new market for growers.

“Increasing purchasing options to our consumers directly helps strengthen our small farm and home businesses that are represented here at the market, so by increasing our local purchasing options it helps both consumer and farmer.”

The Rutherford county producer-only farmers market is located in the Lane Agri-Park Community Center, on John Rice Blvd., in Murfreesboro. The market is open Tuesday and Friday mornings from 7:00 a.m. until noon.
