Mid-State Woman Shot in Church Dies

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A woman who was shot inside a Putman County church last week has died from her injuries.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said that 61-year-old Etta Medley died on Sunday after being shot by her brother-in-law during a domestic violence incident at the Double Springs Church.

Investigators say Medley was trying to save her sister when she was shot by her brother-in-law inside the church in the Double Springs community on Feb. 2.

Police say the sisters had arrived at church early and were the only ones inside when 64-year-old Tommy Meadows came to the church armed with a weapon and looking for his estranged wife. Authorities say Meadows shot his wife's sister during a struggle and then killed himself.

The wife, Wanda Meadows, was able to escape.
