Millennials making waves in the American workforce

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  More than 200 mid-state business executives are set to attend a conference that asks: How do companies deal effectively with employees raised entirely in the digital age?

Jones College of Business at Middle Tennessee State University is hosting the sold out conference Friday. College Dean David Urban notes that by the year 2020, 40 percent of the American workforce will be Millennials; young people who reached adulthood in the year 2000.

Dr. Urban says the conference will provide company managers, many of whom are from the baby boom generation, insights on how to deal with the new crop of workers.

“In the past, for baby boomers, where in the workplace maybe the reward for a job well done was no punishment, millennials tend to want more frequent performance feedback and reinforcement of what they do, and that’s a little difficult for some of their baby boomer managers to deal with.”

Urban says that, while Millennials may be high maintenance, they can make a significant contribution to a company’s bottom line if managed properly. Urban notes, for instance, that Millennials tend to be remarkably creative and entrepreneurial.
