MTSU Coach Gets Big Response to Tweet about Winter Coats

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A Middle Tennessee State Coach has gotten more than he bargained for after posting to Twitter that he’d just seen children without coats waiting for a school bus.

MTSU Assistant Athletic Director and golf coach Whit Turbow says that within hours he received requests from local schools for dozens of coats, mostly from teachers worried about specific students in their classes.

“We made a drop at Bradley Academy on Friday. They told us that two second graders that showed up, walked there without coats on and they had to warm them up before they could send them to class.”

Turnbow says he now has hundreds of requests for coats and the pleas for assistance just keep coming. He’s also gotten a remarkable response from mid-state residents wanting to help.

“I’m getting Facebook messages and messages on Twitter and people are calling – random text messages from people saying ‘Hey, where can I drop money off? Where can I drop coats off?’”

Turnbow says the project’s grown so large so quickly that he’s enlisted the help of the MTSU Athletic Department. Department receptionists are fielding calls for assistance and about donations. MTSU athletics is planning coat drives at upcoming Blue Raider basketball games.
