MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Middle Tennessee State University announced Wednesday that it had one of its best fundraising years ever in fiscal 2012-13.

The university says it raised nearly $14 million dollars from more than 17,000 donors for the second best one-year total in the school’s history.

Joe Bales, Vice President for University Advancement, says much of the money will go toward helping students stay in school.

“As we all know, with rising costs of education we want to be sure that we have the adequate resources to help those students complete that education. So student scholarships and support for their educational activities will be first and foremost.”

Bales says money raised will also go toward endowing professorships, improving facilities on campus, and toward athletic programs.

The current fundraising campaign stands at more than $70 million raised, or about 85 percent of the stated $80 million goal. The campaign is scheduled to continue through the end of 2015.
