MTSU student involved in armed standoff with police

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Murfreesboro Police were able to end a dangerous standoff with an armed man Monday without loss of life.

A police incident report says 20-year-old Middle Tennessee State University student Eric T. Morgan barricaded himself inside his E. Main St. apartment and refused to come out.

The MPD responded to Morgan’s address after receiving a call indicating the young man was suicidal and had a gun. Officers spent several hours trying to talk Morgan into surrendering, initially without success.

A report by WSMV-TV says the standoff continued so long Morgan’s family members had time to drive from Memphis to Murfreesboro, but also failed to get him to surrender.

Eventually the MPD Swat Team battered down the front door and lobbed tear gas into the room. Police say at that point Morgan fired shots out a front window, but no one was struck and the SWAT Team did not return fire.

Police say they then rolled what they’re calling a rescue communications robot into the room and after more negotiations Morgan finally surrendered.

Eric Morgan was booked into the Rutherford County Jail on $150,000 bond and will make an initial court appearance on Feb. 23, 2015.
