Murf City Council and Electric Board to hold public meeting on MTEMC merger

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The Murfreesboro City Council and the Murfreesboro Electric Board will hold a joint meeting this week to discuss a proposed merger of the city’s electric service with Middle Tennessee Electric.

In late May MTEMC suggested to the city that it consider selling Murfreesboro Electric to the Cooperative.

Middle Tennessee Electric serves all of Cannon, Rutherford, Williamson and Wilson counties, along with portions of five other mid-state counties.

MTEMC spokesman Brad Gibson says the Cooperative would expect to hire all current Murfreesboro Electric employees at their current salaries and benefits.

He says the combined services would be better able to keep customer power bills stable.

“The future of the electric industry (is) bringing those economy of scale together to allow us to ensure rate stability; making sure those folks bills are as stable as possible moving into the future. I think that this opportunity is something that can make that happen.”

The joint meeting of the Murfreesboro City Council and the Murfreesboro Electric Board will be open to the public. It will be held in the City Hall Chambers this Thursday evening beginning at 5 p.m.
