Murf. Police ram suspects car to end high speed pursuit

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Murfreesboro Police have charged a Jackson man with two counts of aggravated assault after they say he nearly struck an officer with his car.

The MPD says officers were called to the Walmart on Old Ft. Parkway yesterday evening at around 5:30 p.m. regarding possible shoplifting. An incident report says that when officers confronted the suspect, 45-year-old Paul J. Register, he appeared to try to run down one of the officers with his car.

The officers say he then sped away at a high speed, running stop lights as he went. Police located Register again at the corner of Broad and Main and chased him to the intersection of Church Street and I-24.

As Register attempted to get on the interstate, several officers boxed him in and they all ended up in the median. The chase came to an end when one officer struck Register’s car with his patrol vehicle, pushing him into a ditch.

Register faces several charges, including two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, felony evading, and resisting arrest.

He was booked into the Rutherford County Jail on a $68,000 bond.
