Murf. woman shoots at dog, hits her hand instead

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  -- A Murfreesboro woman says she managed to shoot herself in the hand while trying to kill a dog in her backyard.

Fifty-five-year-old Freda Harwell tells police that she was trying to shoot a dog that was chasing her cat in the backyard of her West Street home at about 4 a.m. this morning.

Harwell shot herself in the left hand with a .22 caliber handgun. She told police that she dropped the gun in the backyard after the accident, but officers weren’t able to locate the weapon.

Police say there was gun powder residue around the wound.

The incident has been turned over to MPD detectives for investigation.

Harwell was taken for treatment. No word yet today on her condition.
