Murfreesboro has one of the fastest growing economies in the nation

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A new report concludes Murfreesboro has one of the fastest growing economies in the nation.

The personal finance website Wallethub.com looked at 10 metrics to rank the economies of the nation’s 500 largest cities. Murfreesboro ranked 21st in the country and even higher on a list that included only median sized cities.

Wallethub’s Jill Gonzalez says Murfreesboro’s jobless rate has fallen 12 percent since the start of the recession, income is up by more than 1 percent, housing values are up by 2 percent, and the city's population is also expanding.

“Since 2008 Murfreesboro has actually had more of a population growth than even Nashville at around 4 percent. That alone ranks it in the top 10 just for population growth alone.”

The only downside that Gonzalez notes is widening income disparity. She says the difference between the city’s richest and poorest residents has grown by seven percent. She says, however, that income disparity is a growing problem in nearly every city in the nation.
