Murfreesboro Meeting Explores End-of-Life Issues

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Several of the area’s leading health care providers are partnering to get Middle Tennesseans talking about end-of-life care.

The program “The Gift Initiative” is supported by Vanderbilt University, Saint Thomas Health, Alive Hospice and The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation. The Initiative is convening a panel discussion on end of life issues Tuesday evening at the Center for the Arts in Murfreesboro.

Alive Hospice spokesman Phil Barnett said only about one person in three has documented what their desires are for their end of life care.

“We think about it. We don’t document it. Sometimes it’s a disease. Sometimes it’s as easy as an automobile accident or a tragedy at home that puts us in a position where we can no longer express what our desires are.”

Panelists will include Dr. Jim Nunnery and Chaplain Jeff Friar from Middle Tennessee Medical Center, along with Murfreesboro attorney John Blankenship and Teresa Quance of Alive Hospice.

The meeting is free and open to the public but an RSVP is requested. You can register by calling 615-896-4663. Visit alivehospice.org for more information.
