DETAILS: This concert, presented in conjunction with the Vanderbilt Center for Latin-American Studies, is a varied and accessible program of Baroque and early Classical music written by Mexican composers. Composers Ignacio de Jerusalem, Manuel de Zumaya, and Gaspar Fernandes will be featured in short sacred works and secular music based on folk tunes. The theme of the concert will be a Mission-town festival, complete with decorations.

Music City Baroque, Nashville’s historically-informed ensemble will be performing this concert on period instruments – instruments similar to those used at the time this music was written. Percussion instruments from Mexico and Colonial California and Classical guitar will be featured, as well. Music City Baroque’s Chamber Chorus is made up of professional vocalists who specialize in Baroque music. Music City Baroque Music-Director emeritus, Murray Somerville, returns to Nashville to conduct the concert.

Following the concert, there will be a show and tell of native Mexican percussion instruments, such as deer rattles and turtle-shell drums, and a Question and Answer session.

Music City Baroque, now in its ninth season, offers ensemble and chamber music of the 17th and 18th centuries played on period instruments, in the style the composers would have heard, with all its original color and passion. Performers are drawn from members of the Nashville Symphony and faculties of the schools of music at Vanderbilt, MTSU and Belmont.
