Nashville dancers headed to prestigious European ballet competition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A pair of Nashville Ballet company dancers are gearing up to represent Tennessee in a prestigious dance competition in Europe next month.

Alexandra Meister and Nicolas Scheuer have been invited to compete in the 27th International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria, beginning July 15. The Olympic-style event is held every two years and attracts dancers from around the world.

Alexandra Meister says they’ve prepared several pieces to dance during the 15 day competition. They’ll perform portions of the Nashville Nutcraker and Swan Lake, but will also perform an original work created by Artistic Director Paul Vasterling.

“He created a piece for us. We found this really neat piece by a Bulgarian composer. It’s a little Carmina Burana feel to it with the big music and the vocals.”

Meister and Scheuer hope to bring home some dancing gold, but if not Meister says the competition is a win-win for Nashville dance.

“We’ll get to meet other dancers, work with different teachers…learn from other dancers. Eventually, coming next season, we’ll take all this stuff we’ve learned and improve our performances for the Nashville Ballet.”

The Nashville Ballet has opened a GoFundMe account to support the competition team during their two week stay in Europe. Look for it at gofundme.com/nickandalex
