Nashville officer wounded, teen killed in exchange of gunfire

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A Nashville SWAT Team member was wounded and a teenaged robbery suspect killed in a confrontation with police.

WTVF reports that 16-year-old Xavier McDonald died in the exchange of gunfire. Forty-two year old veteran officer John Downs was shot in the leg near the groin.

Metro Police say they responded to a robbery call at around 7 p.m. last night. A man reported being robbed in the parking lot of a condo complex in the Nashboro Village area.

Police say they followed leads to a nearby home. Once they gained entry to the residence, McDonald reportedly came out of a back bedroom armed with a handgun.

Officers say they tried to use a tazer on the juvenile, but that attempt failed. Police say McDonald then fired on officers, striking Downs in the leg.

Four other officers in the room reportedly returned fired, killing McDonald.

Downs is being treated at Vanderbilt Medical Center where he’s listed in stable condition.
