New state laws take effect on Friday, July 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A number of new state laws are set to take effect on Friday, including one that requires all DUI offenders to use an ignition interlock device.

Other measures taking effect this week include an extension of the Statute of Limitations for cases of Aggravated Statutory Rape from 15 to 18 years.

School bus drivers will face more severe penalties if they’re caught using a cell phone or other electronic devise while transporting Tennessee children.

The FOCUS Act will strip supervision of six state universities from the Tennessee Board of Regents and set up individual governing boards for each school.

After July 1 the Tennessee Department of Labor will be required to ensure that anyone getting unemployment benefits applies for at least three jobs each week or visits a career center.

And more than 400 of the state’s grocery stores will begin selling wine on Friday.
