The NSA's Mystic Program on The World for 3-19-14

PRI's The World - with Host Marco Werman

On our program today…

There are voice mail retrieval systems, and then there's the NSA's MYSTIC program.

The latest leaks from Edward Snowden have been written up by the Washington Post, and they contain more details about the extent to which the NSA can sweep up information. In this case, it looks like an entire country's phone calls. Yes, an entire country. We'll speak with one of the authors of the Washington Post article.

And from too much information, to too little. The families of those missing aboard Malaysia Airlines flight 370 expressed anger and outrage at the lack of information on the fate of their loved ones during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today. We'll check in the BBC's Jennifer Pak, who attended the press conference and has been speaking with families.

Plus, Libya's got a drinking problem. Homemade hooch is apparently a big, and somewhat dangerous, issue in the nominally dry country.

We'll also profile Oslo-born chef and blogger Paul Lowe, better known as Sweet Paul, for his tasty baked treats. He'll tell us about learning to cook lop-sided chocolate cakes with his grandmother and great aunt.
