MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — There has been a delay in body cameras that Memphis police say were expected to be in use by October.
The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1WOBIZA) officials said Wednesday that neither the body cameras nor the camera systems for squad cars are in use. Memphis police showed off the department's new body cameras in September.
Memphis Police Department spokesman Louis Brownlee says that Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich's office requested the delay.
Brownlee says Weirich's office asked them to hold back on it so that they can train their people on using it for prosecution.
Weirich confirmed that Wednesday, saying her office needed more training on the videos, specifically their storage, usage and dissemination.
Weirich says she's looking to have her office ready for the new technology around Jan. 1.
