One of the world’s foremost authorities on the physical development of youth within the context of activity and sport, Dr. Robert Malina’s research has focused on the biological growth and maturation of children and adolescents, with an emphasis on motor development and performance, physical activity, and young athletes. He has also studied the influence of physical activity and training on youth sport and written about the emergence of excess weight among rural indigenous youth in southern Mexico. A co-chair of the 2004 CDC Expert Panel on Youth Physical Activity and a member of the advisory committee that authored the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, Dr. Malina currently serves on the Committee on Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth of the National Academy of Sciences. An editorial board member of several journals in the sports sciences and former editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Human Biology, Dr. Malina has received the Citation Award from the American College of Sports Medicine, the Clark Hetherington Award from the National Academy of Kinesiology, and the Franz Boas Distinguished Achievement Award from the Human Biology Association.
