MARTIN, Tenn. (AP) — A woman followed a congressman down a Tennessee highway, jumped out of her own vehicle, then screamed at him while pounding on the windows of his car, authorities said.
Wendi Wright, 35, followed a vehicle occupied by Republican U.S. Rep. David Kustoff on Monday after a town hall meeting with constituents at the University of Tennessee at Martin, the Weakley County Sheriff's Department said in a news release. Authorities didn't say if Wright attended the town hall or why she followed Kustoff, a first-term congressman who represents 15 counties in west Tennessee.
Kustoff was riding with an aide when they pulled off the highway because they were in fear of being run off the road, the sheriff's office said. Wright banged on the windows of Kustoff's vehicle and also reached inside it before standing in front of the vehicle to keep them from leaving, officials said.
Wright was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment after posting details of the encounter on Facebook, the sheriff's office said. She is out of jail on $1,000 bond. It's unknown if she has a lawyer; the court clerk's office was closed Thursday. An arraignment is scheduled for Monday.
Lawmakers across the country have faced angry constituents at town halls since President Donald Trump's election. Casey Black, a spokeswoman for Kustoff, referred questions to authorities.
The sheriff's office did not return calls seeking more details.
