Printmaker Katy Seals Comes to Middle Tennessee State University

The MTSU Department of Art will host Katy Seals, Assistant Professor of Printmaking at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma this September 30–October 3, 2013. She will conduct a visiting artist lecture and workshop at MTSU’s Todd Hall. In addition to her teaching Seals has spent the past eight years organizing and attending a variety of international printmaking conferences and workshops.  She has worked as a part of Drive-By Press, an educational collaborative which traveled over 250,000 miles to teach people about printmaking and art.  She is a co-founder of the "Bump-It Mafia," a female printmaking collaborative that focuses on making work concerning women and advocates the benefits of being positive role models for younger female artists just starting out in their career.

Well-versed in all print processes, Sealswill come to MTSU for one week to conduct a workshop, provide an artist lecture, and show original fine prints from her collection.  She intends to spend her time on campus creating a commemorative work to country singer George Jones a.k.a. "Possum," who died earlier this year.  Focusing on screen printing and sculptural elements Seals’ body of work focuses on low-brow American culture, aiming to reveal the absurdity and paradoxical nature of Southern culture.

Of her work Seals states, “The characters featured in my images … explore issues of excess and over-indulgence in American culture,[and] are part of a very specific narrative. I am greatly influenced by stories and cultural situations of the South and am particularly ?interested in the social roles assigned to Southern women.”

All MTSU Department of Art and Todd Art Gallery exhibits, receptions, and lectures are free and open to the public.
