PRI's The World Celebrates the Tibetan New Year with Several Stories for 2-28-14

PRI's The World - with Host Marco Werman

We also want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Tibetan New Year, that is.

Sunday marks Losar, the Tibetan New Year. We're celebrating with two stories. First, you'll hear from food blogger Tencho Gyatso to find out all about her favorite Tibetan treats, including a very special cookie, and a sweet rice drink called Chaang. Delicious. Also, the New York Times' Andrew Jacobs tells us about a library that's been built in China to house Tibetan literary treasures.

Of course Sunday also marks the 86th Academy Awards ceremony. KCRW's Matt Holzmann handicaps the contenders for Best Foreign Film. Host Marco Werman also speaks with Maysaa Karaa, the Lebanese singer whose version of The Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" can be heard on the soundtrack of the multi-Oscar-nominated film, American Hustle.

And we also head to South Africa, where The World's Anders Kelto fills us in on the preparations ahead of the Oscar Pistorius trial, which begins on Monday.

Plus, how do you stay safe, electronically speaking, when traveling abroad? Author Julia Angwin joins us to discuss how she tackles data security when she travels.

Oh, here's a hint: tinfoil. Yep, tinfoil.
