Event Highlights Illiteracy in Middle Tennessee

Read To Succeed Holding Fundraiser Tonight

An important event Tuesday night for the program "Read to Succeed" of Rutherford County.

The literacy organization is conducting the year’s biggest fundraiser this evening at 7 in the Patterson Park Community Center.

The event includes a celebrity spelling bee featuring four local mayors, including Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess.

Read to Succeed’s Sarah Porterfield says 44% of Rutherford County's adults read at, or below, a third grade level. The county's children read at about the same level.

Read to succeed hopes to reach the year’s fundraising goal of 50 thousand dollars Tuesday tonight. Tickets are still available for the celebrity spelling bee. You can find details at readtosucceed.org.

Porterfield says the agency is always looking for literacy volunteers.
