Salvation Army responds to heat threat to the homeless

Salvation Army

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The mid-state’s sometimes dangerously hot summer days can be especially challenging for one of the region’s most vulnerable populations, the homeless.

The Salvation Army of Murfreesboro is responding by providing what the charity is calling “hydration stations” and “cooling centers” near areas where the homeless tend to congregate.

The first of two stations is located at the Army’s Murfreesboro headquarters building at 1137 West Main St. The second can be found at the Army’s Family Story location at 125 S. Front Street.

The charity’s John Mitchell says Salvation Army food trucks will also be used to deliver water to the homeless wherever they congregate.

“We know where some of the homeless are, and we’ll work with them strategically. We have a truck that will go out sometimes right to the site and maybe hand out bottles of water.”

The Salvation Army is accepting donations of bottled water and new water bottles along with cash donations to aid their hydration station efforts.
