NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT) -- The Tennessee School Boards Association is recommending it’s members ignore – at least for now - a request from a conservative group to see all records pertaining to any school lessons taught about Islam.
The American Center for Law & Justice recently sent letters to every school system in Tennessee making an open records request for the information. The ACLJ says it made the request after concerning parents contacted the Christian based litigation group.
In a video posted on its website, the ACLJ says parents from all over the country are expressing similar concerns. The group has started an online petition protesting the Islam classes that has more than 200,000 signatures.
The State of Tennessee’s academic standards require Jr. High and High School students study how the world’s religions have impacted world history. Islam is just one of dozens of religions covered.
A Tennessee School Board representative tells WMOT the group sent letters to member schools last week suggesting they hold off on providing the records. The Association believes only state residents have legal standing to make an open records request.
