MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- One man was seriously injured early Thursday in the crash of a small plane at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport.
Murfreesboro Fire Department spokesperson Ashley McDonald reports that rescue units arrived on the scene around 8:45 a.m. They found one man injured and trapped in the wreckage of a single engine aircraft.
It took firefighters more than 20 minutes to extricate the plane’s pilot and only occupant from the wreckage. He had minor lacerations and a broken leg, and was transported by Life Flight to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.
The pilot has been identified as 49 year old Randall Ray. Officials say it’s unclear at this time if Ray was taking off or landing at the airport. Federal Aviation Administration records indicate the Cessna 172 aircraft Ray was flying is registered to Skylark Flight Training located in Hartford, CT.
Middle Tennessee State University has an extensive presence at the airport. A school spokesman confirms that no MTSU aircraft, instructors, or students were involved in the accident.
Federal Investigators are reportedly on the scene.
