Smyrna Officer Rescues Woman from Burning Apartment

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A Smyrna police officer rescued a woman from a burning apartment overnight.

Smyrna Police say that just before 4 a.m. this morning they received a call just before 4 a.m that apartment 168 at the Imperial Gardens complex was on fire. When officers arrived heavy smoke was boiling out of the apartment.

Police Lieutenant Bart Myers broke in the front door and then crawled into the apartment on his stomach. He located the apartment’s resident, 67 year-old Hazel Starnes, ten feet from the door. He dragged her outside and Smyrna Firemen began CPR.

Starnes was transported to the burn unit at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville where she’s listed in critical condition. Officer Myers was treated for smoke inhalation at Stonecrest Hospital and released.

Smyrna Police say the Smyrna Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the blaze.
