State of Emergency Declared as Freeze Hits Tenn.

greenhousemin.org/

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) —  As sub-freezing temperatures settle in here in the mid-state, local charities report that some of the region’s most vulnerable residents are having trouble keeping the heat on.

Jane Sharp, Co-Director of Greenhouse Ministries in Murfreesboro, says her agency is hearing from a lot of people who are having trouble buying enough propane or heating oil to keep their homes warm.

“Very, very difficult for people who are low income, disabled or elderly. It would be very good for you to check on your neighbors. They sometimes don’t know to ask and it’s a good thing to check on them.”

Sharp says there are a number of charities in the mid-state that offer help with heating bills, and urges anyone having trouble staying warm to reach out for help.

The cold snap led Gov. Bill Haslam to declare a State of Emergency in Tennessee.  Among other things, the declaration allows propane delivery drivers to work longer hours in the hopes of ensuring timely delivery to homes and businesses during the cold spell.

Subfreezing temperatures could continue through Saturday.
