Statewide, Collegiate LGBT Conference Comes to the Mid-State

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  What’s being billed as the first ever statewide collegiate lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender conference is scheduled for this week here in the mid-state.

About 100 students from 30 of the state’s colleges and universities are registered to attend the annual three-day SpringOut! Pride Week event at Middle Tennessee State University.

Joshua Rigsby is president of the sponsoring organization, MT Lambda.

“Pride events that happen regionally usually happen during the summertime and a students are back at home. They’re on summer break. So they really don’t have an opportunity to take campus life and pride for the LGBT community and turn them into one thing and so that’s what this event serves to do.”

Elizabeth Birch, executive director of the Human Rights Campaign from 1995 to 2004, is the event’s keynote speaker.

The event is being sponsored Deloitte Services LLP and Nissan North America.

SpringOut! Pride Week begins Thursday here on the MTSU campus.
