For Tenn. college grads, mid-state not a bad place to launch a career

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The tens of thousands of Tennesseans graduating from the state’s colleges and universities in the last few days should be pleased to hear that the mid-state is a pretty good place to begin a career.

WMOT reporting partners at the personal finance website Wallethub.com on Monday released a list of the best and worst metro areas in the nation to find that first job. In a list of 150 cities, Nashville clocked in at a respectable 21.

Analyst Jill Gonzalez says Wallethub looked at nearly 20 metrics, including starting salaries, employment rates, job satisfaction and quality of life. She says the mid-state has unusually high starting salaries and some of the country’s best quality of life numbers. She also says there’s a lot of different types of industries to choose from.

“We looked at industry diversity as well, and not only can you go there for one thing, if you’re really trying to focus, but you can find a lot of different types of opportunities that span multiple industries.”

Knoxville, Memphis and Chattanooga also made the list, but Nashville was the only Tennessee city to crack the top 25.
