MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  More than two-dozen Middle Tennessee Red Cross volunteers are lending a hand in West Virginia following severe flooding there last week.

Mid-State Sr. Disaster Program Manager David Kitchen says the damage in West Virginia is so severe his folks are having trouble reaching the areas with the most pressing need. He says volunteers are providing shelter, food, medical care, emotional care, and disaster assessments.

“W actually right now have deployed a total of 31 from Tennessee and will be deploying more. In addition to West Virginia, we have volunteers that are deployed to Texas and California. But Westg Virginia has had some dramatic need because of the thousands of people that have been impacted.”

Kitchen says the situation in West Virginia is yet another reminder that everyone needs to be prepared to care for themselves for several days following a disaster.

“You may be cut off from help, it may be a period of time before the Red Cross or FEMA or the Southern Baptists or anyone may be able to get to you, so we actually suggest that individuals be prepared to self-sustain for up to 72 hours.”
