NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Senate has approved a bill to rename and review Common Core education standards, and Gov. Bill Haslam says he plans to sign the measure into law.
The chamber voted 27-1 on Tuesday to approve the measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Mike Bell of Riceville. The House version passed on a 97-0 vote a day earlier.
Haslam told reporters that his main concern was that a review of the standards proceeded "in an orderly way, so our educators knew what to prepare for." Haslam said he's satisfied the bill accomplishes that, so he plans to sign it.
Common Core standards are a set of voluntary goals created by a bipartisan team of governors and adopted in more than 40 states. But many Republicans view them as a federally mandated curriculum.
