MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The majority of Tennesseans disapprove of the way Barak Obama is handling his presidency, putting the state out of step with the rest of the nation.

Pollsters at Middle Tennessee State released results Wednesday that show 51 percent of residents surveyed are not happy with the president’s performance, while 33 percent approve.

The latest results from the Pew Research Center show that nationwide, 51 percent of Americans approve of the president’s handling of the presidency.

The MTSU Poll’s Jason Reineke says Tennesseans are strongly divided along party and racial lines.

“Among whites 59 percent disapprove of the job Barack Obama is doing as president, while only 26 percent approve. Among African-Americans in Tennessee 87 percent say they approve of the job Obama is doing as president, while only 3 percent say this disapprove.”

Reineke says the U.S. Congress fared even worse, with fully 70 percent of Tennesseans unhappy with the way congress is conducting its business.
