NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — In Tennessee, ACT scores for the high school class of 2012 show a slight improvement in all subject areas, but the state’s scores are still among the lowest in the nation.
All public school students in Tennessee take the ACT in their senior year. That amounts to more than 68,000 students statewide, according to ACT results released today.
The average composite score for Tennessee seniors in 2012 was up two-tenths to19.7. The percentage of Tennessee students earning scores that indicate readiness for college courses also increased in each of the subjects.
In English, the average score increased two-tenths to 19.6, reading scores jumped two-tenths to 19.9, math scores move up one-tenth to 19.1, and science scores rose two-tenths to 19.6.
In spite of the improved scores, the ACT numbers suggest less than half of Tennessee students are prepared to tackle college level math, science or reading. Only one student in six is ready for college science.
Among the 50 states, only Mississippi students had lower ACT scores than Tennessee.
