Tennessee county commissioners adjourn without voting on gay marriage measure

blounttn.org

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A proposed resolution asking God to have mercy on a Tennessee county for issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples apparently didn't have a prayer of being considered Tuesday.

A committee in Blount County declined to discuss the measure and instead voted 10-5 against approving an agenda containing the measure. The committee abruptly adjourned, and the members who voted against the inclusion of the proposal left without speaking to the news media.

The sudden adjournment shocked the 150 citizens packing a meeting room, as some shouted "Cowards!" Neither supporters nor detractors seemed to know what the committee's adjournment meant for the resolution in the long run.

The proposed resolution stated that Blount County must comply with the Supreme Court ruling by issuing and recognizing marriage licenses for same-sex couples but asked state officials to defend "natural marriage" from "lawless" court opinions and defend moral standards."

The language also appeals directly to God, stating: "We adopt this resolution before God that He pass us by in His Coming Wrath and not destroy our County as He did Sodom and Gomorrah."
