Tennessee not a bad place to retire

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --   Tennessee may not have Florida’s sandy beaches or Arizona’s Grand Canyon scenery, but it turns out the state isn’t a bad place to retire.

WMOT reporting partner Wallethub.com recently analyzed 24 metrics to rank the nation’s 150 most retirement friendly cities.  Nashville made the list at position 25. Knoxville and Chattanooga also ranked above average.

Wallethub analyst Jill Gonzalez says Tennessee’s low cost of living and low tax rates helped the state’s cities score well. She cautions, however, that the state could use more senior care facilities.

Gonzalez notes there was at least one surprise at the top of the list of most retirement friendly cities.

“The top five cities were mostly in Florida. We have Orland, Cap Coral; Tampa was number one, Scottsdale (AZ) was number two. But surprisingly Boise, Idaho, was number three here if Florida and Arizona are not your thing.”

Gonzalez says Wallethub encourages savings from an early age. She notes that only about 10 percent of American workers are in a financial position to retire at 65.
