Is Tennessee still technology challenged?

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A new survey suggests Tennessee is keeping pace with the nation as a whole in the area of technology adoption and broadband internet access.

A public–private partnership called Connected Tennesseecommissioned the survey. It reveals that 81 percent of the state’s businesses have broadband internet access, up 5 percent in a single year and slightly better than the national average.

The survey also indicates that Tennessee companies are pulling in more than $37 billion a year in online sales alone.

Connected Tennessee Executive Director Corey Johns says Tennessee was firmly in the “technology challenged” category when his organization launched in 2007, but has made tremendous strides in the years since.

Johns does note, however, that Tennessee is still behind the technology curve in other respects.

“Four in ten Tennessee small businesses are still without a website today, which means that they’re missing out on the potential opportunities to connect with customers or suppliers.”

Johns also notes that one Tennessee business in five reports having troubling finding enough workers with the right kind of technology training.
