Tennessee's Corker "closely examining" Obama's move on Cuba

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP/WMOT)  --  A number of Republicans and a few Democrats are reacting angrily to President Obama’s move to normalize relations with Cuba, but a prominent Tennessee Republican is taking a more measure tone.

Likely Republican presidential contender Marco Rubio reacted furiously to the president’s initiative, saying in part that the move “is a victory for oppressive governments the world over.”

But Tennessee Senator Bob Corker, who is likely to head the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the next Congress, was more reserved in his reaction.

Corker commented on his website Thursday that the Obama Administration has released few details about the deal normalizing relations with Cuba. He goes on to say that he’ll be “closely examining the implications of these major policy changes.”

There’s likely little Congress can do to block the president’s initiative, because the move is favored by American farmers and business interests hoping to expand trade.
