Tennessee's top Republicans critical of Trump rhetoric

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Tennessee’s top Republicans are among those criticizing GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump for his remarks following Sunday’s terror attack in Florida.

Following the shooting deaths of 49 people at a gay bar in Orlando by self-styled ISIS supporter Omar Mateen, Trump again called for a halt to all Muslim immigration to the U.S.

Responding to Trump’s remarks, Tennessee Senator Bob Corker told reporters yesterday that he continues to be “discouraged” by Trump’s campaign comments, saying that the Republican candidate’s remarks are not what the country needs at a difficult time.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander went even further, questioning Trump’s place at the top of the GOP presidential ticket.

The paper says Alexander refused to acknowledge Trump as the GOP presumptive nominee, saying "We do not have a nominee until after the convention."

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and several other Republican governor’s met with Trump Tuesday. Haslam hasn’t yet commented on that meeting, but has been critical of the GOP candidate in earlier statements.

Haslam recently told reporters that he would be asking Trump about his often incendiary remarks when they met, saying "I do think words matter, and that's one of the conversations we will have.”
