US Navy Band to Present Free Concert at Lipscomb University

The Lipscomb University Department of Music presents a free concert by the United States Navy Band’s Country Current, on Monday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium.

Country Current is the Navy’s premier country music ensemble. The seven-member group was formed in 1973 and is nationally renowned for its versatility and musicianship. The band performs a blend of modern country music and cutting-edge bluegrass.

This ensemble employs musicians from diverse backgrounds with extensive high-profile recording and touring experience in the music scenes of Nashville, New York, New Orleans and more. The band utilizes banjo, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, fiddle, electric bass, upright bass, dobro, pedal steel guitar and drum set.

Touring the country each year in support of Navy recruiting, they have performed with such artists as Boots Randolph, Charlie Daniels, Vince Gill and David Ball.

The band’s notable alumni include Wayne Taylor, Jerry Gilmore and Frank Sollivan. They have performed at the Grand Ole Opry, the Academy of Country Music Awards show, for Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and overseas in Stockholm, Nova Scotia and Beijing.

In 1996, Country Current released a compact disc, “Sugarland Run,” featuring 18 country and bluegrass standards and originals. In 2004, the group released “Country Current LIVE.” The group received national acclaim during Operation Desert Storm for an original composition entitled “We Are With You,” which aired on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” TNN’s “Nashville Now” and over 500 U.S. and Canadian radio and television stations.
